So, everyone that has heard of Pinzgauer, raise your hand. Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?
The Swiss military has been a pretty good source for released older vehicles. They are extremely capable in both 4×4 and 6×6 versions.
They are fairly small, quite light, they don’t make much power… and with the portal axles, they have extreme ground clearance. They are also generally well geared for off-road use.
Air-cooled, swing-axles and forward control aren’t words normally associated with high-performance off-road vehicles. Air-cooled and swing-axle is more likely to bring VW Bugs to mind than military transport vehicles. But they were able to make it work.
The 4wd club I’m in has a member with a Pinz. The kids LOVE to ride in it on the trails. When we do the Mud4Blood event, it is always a crowd favorite.
