I have always loved the styling of the classic Indian Chief motorcycles. The full streamlined fenders, the classic lines… the flow… looking like they are rolling even as they sit still.

But, the price is steep… and there is an alternative that takes the styling of the classic Indian and marries it to fuel injection and modern reliability. The alternative is the Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter… They were made from 1999 to 2005. And they were a commercial flop… I talked to a dealer while new bikes were still in the showrooms, and he remarked that people loved them or hated them… They either came in to buy one or wouldn’t consider one. I guess I fall in the “love it” camp.

And even 3 years after they stopped making them, there were “brand new” Drifters being advertised by dealers.  Kind of wild that these bikes were so unpopular… but then so were Superbirds.
